Useful information passed on from AKC Delegate Don James
We all know the dangers of Xylitol a substance found in sugarless gum, candy and even some peanut butter. Here’s something everyone needs to be aware of. This is from a woman who’s Lab ate 1/2 a pack of her daughter’s sugar free gum.
As she headed for an emergency clinic, she was advised by the emergency vet to stop and get some sugar and administer it to the dog. When a dog ingests Xylitol, it causes the dog’s sugar levels to tank, causing seizures and eventually death. She said the dog almost returned to normal after receiving the sugar . However, this is not a cure, but a stopgap measure to buy your dog some time. This is because, if not treated, the Xylitol will shortly attack the dog’s liver, killing it within 2 days.
The bottom line is. Yes, administer sugar, but get to an emergency Vet as fast as you can.
This information can save your dog. One piece of sugar free gum can be fatal to your dog.
